Gay Men’s Walking Group, (Gayswag)

August 19, 2010

Gay Men’s Walking Group, (Gayswag) For those of us living in and around Brighton we really are spoilt for choice, plenty of pubs, clubs and of course, the gym. Away from the scene, for those who want to get a bit of fresh air there is the sea. With everything a stones throw away it is quite easy to forget about the fantastic surrounding countryside the South East has to offer.

Now before you go hiding behind the sofa, hear me out. At the beginning of the month, Sunday, 7th March, I met up with Simon, the group leader of the gayswag where I joined fourteen other men all ready a gentle walk across the Downs. Starting at Lewis train station, where we all introduced ourselves. The first impression was how friendly the group was. Simon told us a little about the walk, how many miles it was and how long it would take. We then made our way up towards the golf course and on to the Downs itself.

If, like me, the most walking you do is to the bus stop, then I’d highly recommend you check out the next walk this coming Sunday 28th March, where the group will be taking in the sights of Friston Forest for a five mile walk. As long as you have sturdy boots and suitable clothing for the day’s weather then a really enjoyable experience awaits you. What is great about these organised walks is that the leader knows the best route to follow, taking away any stress. Yep there’s hills to walk, but not the type were you find mountain goats quaking at the bottom, believe me when I say, I didn’t ache the next day, but I did feel really pleased to have made the effort.

The walk and the views were stunning, with perfect blue skies. But what made the day out so nice was the friendly bunch of guys. By the very nature of the walk, I found myself at some stage near the front, then later taking a slower pace, this enabled me to chat with different people as they too walked at their own speed. At the top of the Downs, I took the opportunity to talk about Zhoosh, and take a couple of photos of the group. After a short break, Simon led us back a different way towards Lewis, where a welcome pub allowed us to sit down, and chat. I had a really great time, the views were stunning and it was so nice to meet up with up with the guys on the walking group. Well behaved dogs are welcome too, please contact gayswag before hand.

A suggested donation of £5.00 will ensure the continuation of this great alternative to the Brighton Scene. For more details on the walks, contact David on the Gayswag website; http://www.gayswag.co.uk/.
