New LGBT Project for Brighton

July 6, 2011

LGBT Health Involvement Project

The staff at Terrance Higgins Trust Brighton has been working on a variety of new and exciting projects. New staff member Nick Douglas is the coordinator for a new initiative working with LGBT organisations in Brighton, (LGBT switchboard, THT South, Mind Out, Allsorts Youth Project, Brighton Both Ways and the Claire Project)     to get a better understanding of the core groups health needs. The data gathered, through interviews, surveys and focus groups from the LGBT community will then be used to help with commissioning and planning for future LGBT projects. The scheme is being funded by Brighton and Hove City Teaching PCT with the main purpose of highlighting issues from minority groups, including:

  • How GP practices can be supported to become more ‘LGBT friendly’
  • The health and wellbeing needs of older LGBT people (50+)
  • Supporting LGBT people who have self harmed or felt suicidal
  • The process of accessing specialist gender identity services for local trans people
  • Meeting the sexual health needs of bisexual people and trans people.

Speaking to Zhoosh, project coordinator Nick Douglas said,

“This is a really exciting new venture to enable local LGBT people to have a stronger voice in healthcare policy and planning in Brighton and Hove and to speak up for the issues that matter to us. I am really looking forward to working with the partner agencies to contribute to the drive to improve and enhance local health services.”

As part of the project, Nick is asking for people who work in organisation that serve the LGBT Brighton community to come forward to help develop the project. For further details please contact Nick direct either through his email: or by phone: 01273-764200.
